Standard models drop around 8 feet, while extended models drop 11 feet or more. Your ceiling height has to exceed the drop length, or the platform won't fully lower. Most home garages with 8 to 11 foot ceilings work great with standard models. Taller garages can take advantage of extended-drop versions. Measure first, order once.

2. Match the Platform Size to What You're Storing

Storage lifts come in different platform sizes, typically 4 by 4 feet, 4 by 6 feet, and 4 by 8 feet. Smaller platforms are perfect for a single tote stack, holiday decorations, or smaller items. Larger 4 by 8 platforms handle long items like kayaks, ladders, roof boxes, and bulkier seasonal gear. Pick the size based on what you're actually putting up there, not the biggest one available. Bigger isn't always better when you're trying to fit between joists or work around ductwork.

3. Capacity vs. Real-World Loading

5. Installation and Ceiling Structure

Storage lifts mount to ceiling joists or trusses, so your ceiling structure matters. Standard 16 inch or 24 inch on-center wood joists work for most installations. Engineered trusses, vaulted ceilings, or unusual framing may need extra attention. Take a few minutes to confirm your ceiling structure can handle a permanent overhead mount before ordering.
